Week 1: 21 Texture Drawings

Symmetry/ Asymmetry

The parts of an image or object organized so that one side duplicates, or mirrors, the other. Also known as formal balance, its opposite is asymmetry.

Texture Sketches:

Rhythm/ Repetition

Rhythm refers to a way of combining elements of art so that the same elements are used over and over again. Thus, a certain color or shape might be used several times in the samepicture. Repetition also can contribute to movement and rhythm in a work of art.

Texture Sketches:

Proportion/ Composition

Proportion - refers to the comparative, proper, or harmonious relationship of one part to another or to the whole with respect to size, quantity, or degree; a ratio.

Composition - The plan, placement or arrangement of the elements of art in a work.

Texture Sketches:

Contrast

A large difference between two things; for example. This term refers to a way of juxtaposing elements of art to stress the differences between them.

Texture Sketches:

Hierarchy

Representing the sizes of things according to their importance, rather than how they would objectively appear in space.

Texture Sketches:

Figure-Ground

The visual unity, yet separability, of a form and its background.

Texture Sketches:

Datum

Projecting from a common reference point.
